SSG John Reiners

John Reiners was born in Haines City on December 23, 1985, as a very active young man and athlete he took part in many different clubs including T-ball, Cub and Boy Scouts (attaining the Arrow of Light Award), Young Astronauts, Band, Police Explorers, Cross Country and the Haines City Hornet Junior Reserve Officers Training Course (JROTC). Here he was on the Raiders, Drill, and Rifle elevating to the rank of Cadet Captain. His patriotism was evident as a kid and JROTC was the foundation that prepared him to become an Army Ranger and small-town hero. In 2004 after High school graduation he enlisted and first attended OSUT training at Fort Benning, GA for 11B MOS. He then went to the vaunted Ranger qualification course, all within the first year of his enlistment. Later becoming a loving husband and Father. His first duty station was at the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Division, 10th Mountain Division (Light fighters) at Fort Drum, NY. During his time at Fort Drum, he was able to serve two different tours, honorably, as a United States Army Infantryman, in Iraq once during the "Surge" in 2005 and then again in 2007 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His second duty station took him to 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division (Ivy Division) at Fort Carson, CO. He was afforded the chance to become a squad leader and lead Soldiers into Combat action in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. On February 13, 2010, Staff Sergeant Reiners was killed in action, as a hero, in Zhari Province. His wounds were sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with improvised explosives devices (IED). Staff Sergeant Reiners was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medal two knots, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal two campaign stars, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service ribbon. With the Infantryman's Blue Cord and Combat Infantryman's Badge, he was awarded the Army Air Assault Badge as well as the Expert Rifleman's badge. Additionally, his unit awards were the Presidential Unit award, Valorous Unit Award, and the Meritorious Unit Award with the French Fourragere. His Combat Service Identification Badges are the 10th Mountain Division and 4th Infantry Division. John is survived by his wife Casey, his son Lex of Colorado Springs, CO, and his mother Ronna
